IP Rating Guide for Outdoor LED Light Fixtures: What Buyers Need to Know
When purchasing outdoor LED fixtures, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating is the most critical spec to ensure long-term performance and avoid water or dust damage. This guide explains common IP ratings and their use cases:
IP Rating Breakdown: The first digit refers to solid particle protection (0-6, 6 = fully dust tight), the second digit refers to liquid ingress protection (0-8, 8 = continuous immersion in water).
IP65: Dust tight, protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Suitable for most general outdoor applications including building facade lighting, parking lot lights, and street lights, in areas with normal rain exposure.
IP66: Dust tight, protected against powerful high-pressure water jets. Ideal for coastal areas with heavy rain, car wash facilities, and industrial sites where fixtures may be exposed to pressure washing.
IP67: Dust tight, protected against temporary immersion in 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. Required for fixtures installed near pools, fountains, flood zones, or underground burial applications.
Common Mistakes to Avoid: Do not use IP20 or IP44 rated indoor fixtures outdoors, even under covered areas, as humidity and dust will cause premature driver failure. Always verify IP rating test reports from manufacturers before purchasing for outdoor projects.
